Food for thought...

I want to share a very interesting article I found on one of my favourite sites (brownsista.com), titled  "Education VS Schooling."
Alot of what the writer said, I was able to apply to my own Ghanaian culture, and how there is so much emphasis placed by family and society, on being married at a certain age, having certain levels of education or degrees, and the pressures one sometimes feel when they haven't attained these ideals...
The writer raises some very good points that will have you reflecting on your own life and situations. Anyway I'll let you read it for yourself, but I'm sure you will find it interesting too, because it's a conversation we've all had at some point...

Check it out at http://brownsista.com/education-vs-schooling and lets get the conversation started!!!

Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

I decided to wash my makeup brushes last week, (which was kinda long overdue). I used washing detergent with a little bit of olive oil (that I bought from the chemist), and the results turned out great!!
Now I don't spend too much on my makeup brushes so sometimes the quality of the brush isn't the best, but after they were dry, the brushes were so soft!! Infact they were much softer than when I originally bought them, and it felt so good against my skin when I used it!!

Try it!!!

Update on Exercise Regimen...

Hey Everybody,

I just wanted to bring you an update on my exercise regimen that I started last week. So, it's been a little over a week and I've already lost 2.5kgs!! I'm so happy!!! I feel good, and I can actually see my body getting smaller in certain areas, especially around my stomach :-)

I've been keeping up with my 50 minute walks 2 days a week, and my 15 minutes skipping sessions 3 mornings a weeks. On-top of that, I'm still doing weights, sit-ups and leg squats every morning.
Most importantly though, I've maintained my smaller portion sizes (especially carbs, and less of it), I've increased my intake of vegies, (especially salad, with 3/4 of what's on my plate being salad), and I'm not eating late, (7pm is my cut off point).
If I get hungry after 7pm, (which I do sometimes,) I eat an apple and drink plenty of water and it does the trick :-) The best thing though is I'm still eating the foods that I enjoy, but just eating less of it, and as a result of eating less, my stomach has shrunk and I don't need to eat as much to get full!!

So what I've learned this past week, is alot of this weight loss stuff is all about attitude and mindset (Dah!!) lol. For example, you have to make yourself full of one serving, (as long as you eat a little you won't starve...lol), and to slow down and take time to enjoy the food you are eating!!!

By the way, I ended up cancelling my gym membership last Thursday!! When I went there, a new manager was there, and she tried to convince me to keep it. I told her confidently though, that I had my own exercise regimen going on at home and I'd seen results already, so she couldn't argue with that!!

Here is a pic of what I'm looking like after a week.

No major changes yet, but little victories are being won each day, so I'm looking forward to continuing on this journey...
Anyway, I hope you are encouraged to go and get fit and healthy for yourself, cause trust me, if I can do it, you can do it too!!!

No Need for Expensive Facials...Just Try an Egg Facial Mask!!

I've been wanting to try an at home facial mask for a while now, but everytime I did a search on google, there were so many different options available, that I would get overwhelmed and eventually just give up!! Keep in mind also that alot of the recipes on offer used ingredients that I didn't have chillin in my kitchen already, therefore I would have to go and buy it, which I thought defeated the purpose of it being 'at home' (meaning it was already 'in my home'... lol).

With today being Sunday though, I decided to finally choose one to try it. So, I settled for the egg facial mask, cause I always have eggs chillin in my fridge, like I'm sure you do too :-)
This mask is great for oily skin (which I sooo have...), because the egg whites cleanse, draws out the oils, exfoliates and tighten, while the egg yolk moisturises and soothes. Perfect right!?!? It sure was :-)

So what do you do?

1. Wash your face with warm water. (I did this while I was in the shower because the steam + the warm water helps with the opening up of pores).

2. Crack 1 egg and separate the yolk and the whites into 2 different bowls.

3. Whip the egg white with a few drops of lemon juice until frothy. (The lemon juice is optional, but it does help drain the excess oils from your face).

4. Apply the egg white mixture all over your face, in a circular motion. Be careful to avoid the eyes and lips!
(I also applied the mixture on my neck, because the neck is an important area to remember when you are doing anything that relates to, and includes the face).

 5. Wait 15-20 minutes, or until your face dries up and hardens, which it will!! (This step must be what botox feels like, because my face was so stiff! I was trying to pull faces, but it wouldn't move...lol)
WARNING: Your face will look weird and nasty as the mask dries up!!! :-P

6. ENJOY YOURSELF AND DO SOMETHING RELAXING WHILE YOU WAIT!! (I watched my favourite weekly reality shows).

7. Wipe your face with a warm towel. (As soon as I did this, I immediately could see the difference in my face looking clear, dry and matte).

8. Whip up the yolk and apply it in the same manner as you did the egg whites and wait for 15-20 minutes. (The yolk had a really nice creamy texture as I applied it, which was a nice change to the feeling of the egg whites, but it did also tighten up!!)

9. Repeat step 6!!

10. Wash the yolk mixture off with warm water, using a damp cloth to clean off any excess residue. Follow this with cold water, which will assist in closing up the pores. (WARNING: The egg yolk does smells a little bit, so make sure to wash and clean it all off properly, especially around the hairline and including your hands).

11. Apply your moisturiser of choice to re-hydrate your face. (My skin did feel a little tingly after I applied the moisturiser, but the feeling went away eventually).

Now I am quite skeptical about all these different skin care regimens, but I definitely noticed that my face was clear, dry, smooth and looked fresh!! So I will be keeping this up and doing it weekly to see if there are any positive long term changes!

My New Exercise Regimen...Trying to Get Fit and Healthy!

I know its been a minute since I last posted so my apologies. I guess I haven't had anything interesting to blog about and I didn't want to post just for the sake of posting something. I wanted to make sure it worth reading and worth your time. You feel me? lol

Anyway, recently the topic that resurfaces a few times a year for me resurfaced again.... What was it? Drum roll........ that I need to go on a diet and lose weight....
In our never ending quest to be healthy and stay looking fly, I'm sure you've all had this conversation too with either your friends or family members at some point during the year.

The reason for me starting the dialogue this time though was due to the fact that I have been on school holidays for the last 2 weeks, and my mom came to stay with me and my brother for a week. As always when she comes over, she cooks and brings so yummy food with her!! I indulged and ate to my hearts content, of which I'm paying for it now :-(

The Conversation
So I had the conversation last Thursday with my brother as we were on our way to Pizza Hut to pick up a lunch order for my brothers and I. (I know... don't judge me...lol). With him being a P.E teacher, he knows the science behind the body, weight loss, the ratio of exercising to eating, what to eat, what not to eat, what to avoid, and the many things one needs to consider when embarking on a weight loss journey. After having the conversation with him, and also getting lots of encouragement from my mom (who is the weight loss queen), I was motivated to begin the following morning.

The Plan
What was my plan of attack? Well I've had a gym membership since 2009 and since I joined I've been pretty committed to going at least 3-5 times a week. Obviously when I first started, I was doing my hour a day, Monday-Friday. As time went on though, I started slacking and dropped it down to 2-3 times a week (as you do...lol), but hey, I was still going!. Then before I went to Ghana last Christmas, I increased my number of days again, in order to shape up for my holiday. Since I got back from Ghana though, I've only been to the gym once... I know...terrible...(yet my account is still being debited every fortnight...). I kept telling myself I would start getting back into it soon, but of course I didn't. So I went to the gym a few months ago determined to cancel my membership! Somehow though, the owner convinced me to keep it! He said things like: "You are only paying 20.00 a fortnight and that's a great price for a 24 hour gym!"; "You may decide you want to start going again just after you cancel and if you want to sign up again later, it will cost alot more to rejoin" (because i joined up when they first opened and they had a special price offer). Yeah, he sold me on keeping my membership, and course I haven't been back since...smh
To cancel or not cancel...that is the question now! But I will come back to that one later...lol

Going back to the conversation with my brother, he said to me, "Love, just start walking again!" That's what I did before I ever joined a gym. I would simply go on a 30 minute walk each morning followed by weights, squats, and situps, combined with minimal eating. I lost 14kg doing it this way!

Day 2: The Decision
So that's exactly what I did the following morning! I got up at 7.30am and did a huge loop around my block. It only took me 50 minutes, but it was probably the longest 50 minutes I've walked in a long while..lol. Along they way, there were sections of the journey (especially towards the end), that had gradual inclines that never seemed to end! This section was intense! Although my legs and butt got a serious workout, they were throbbing, and I just wanted it to be over! Eventually it did, and it was worth all the pain. At this stage, nothing was going to discourage me from my mission!! This is where Beyonce's "Run the World" served a very good purpose. The beat was awesome for keeping a good steady pace, and the snare drums had me almost marching...lol... On top of that, I was doing my subtle dance moves as I was walking which helped pass the time. Also Bey's "Move Your Body" was great too! The dance instructions kept me occupied!
When I got home, I did a combination of exercises with weights, that worked my biceps and triceps; I did leg squats that worked my bottom, thighs, and legs; and I finished off with a variation of sit-ups that worked my abs. When i finished all of this, I felt great!!

Day 3: The Aftermath
I woke up on Saturday morning with my body feeling like lead!! I couldn't move and every muscle in my body was aching!!!! I had indescribable pain in areas that I didn't even know muscles existed!! My body had been smashed!! After arguing in my mind, trying to decided whether or not to get up and go for my walk, I decided to do it. I knew I had to push through the pain, even though I was so sore. My body had to get used to this new routine. So I got up and did it all over again! This time the walk didn't seem as long and I had the amazing voices of the "Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir" keeping me company. I used the time as my morning worship and devotion with God, praising His name as I walked. And as you can imagine, time was nothing but a thing!

Day 4: The Recovery
On Sunday, I rested!!!! My body was still very sore, and I was tired!!

Day 5: The Alternative
Today, I had an early start for work, therefore time was not on my side. I decided to go online and google 'jumping rope' and after clicking on the first link and reading its contents, I discovered that jumping rope was a great high intensity workout. I got up and did 15 minutes, with short breaks in between and worked up a really good sweat! I followed it with my arms, legs and ab exercises and I was good to go! As a result of this, I've decided that on the days I can't go for my walk, I will jump rope instead!

So on top of all this exercsie, I've cut my portions sizes, I'm eating more salads, fruits and vegetables, and not eating after 7pm. I will keep you updated and let you know how I go sticking to my plan and whether I start dropping some kilos :-)

Now, the reason I wanted to share this with you is because I know I'm not alone with this. I know there are many of us who struggle constantly with gaining weight, losing weight, and maintaining our weight. But all it takes is for you to make the decision, workout a plan to make some changes, and then do it! If you fall off your plan at anytime, don't stress, just remember tomorrow is a new day with an opportunity to make a fresh start and make good healthy eating and exercise choices. If I can do it...trust me, you can too!!! :-)))

At my skinniest...size 8...after losing 14kg! And it all started because I was so frustrated that when I went shopping, I could never fit into in any of the jeans!!! lol
Slim face...
Everything is thicker now as you can see..lol
Fuller face...
Ideally I want to be somewhere between these 2 pictures...
